Winter steelhead fly fishing reports 2010

4/12/10

It does not get any better! Tyler Savage on his third day winter steelheading, we racked up some numbers this day.

4/5/10

Finally had a day off and what did we do,,,Go fishing on Easter Sunday. Did a quick float with Tyler for a couple hrs and we managed one swung fish and a couple 3 indobob biters one of is this super fresh hen 20 miles up from the salt with sea lice still hanging on!

3/11/10

Rain is falling , rivers rising , fish running !

3/3/10

March is coming in smooth with plenty of good water and a steady push of fish in every river on the coast, bring your own rock!

2/13/10

Just a few days ago the rivers were too low, fishing slowed to just a few a day, but we liked the weather. Now it's back to normal rain daily with some rivers out of shape and some barely holding in color wise, the flow will be pushing a little on the Calawah for a few days and the Bogy is out for at least four days, at least the floatable section. The Hoh is out for a few as well, and Bear creek on the Sol-Duc has blown the rest of the river downstream. Looks like we will be sharing the few river miles fishable for the first half of next week.

2/8/10

The low water and sunshine had the DISCO ball effect going on the Hoh today we had to find shade or low sun angle to find fish. Some rain is on it's way Wed. we need SOME of it. Been swinging a few holes and hooking at least a fish a day recently along with a handful of nymphing fish, the lower sections of all the rivers are still producing good catches for the gear guys as well.

2/3/2010

Good angling continues! More

2/1/2012

We continue to have March fishing in now February, Aaron O' Leary and myself had a play day on the Sol-duc we hooked 7 and one good grab on the swing but the landing % sucked mostly due to myself!

1/26/10

On the Olympic Peninsula, fishing for the shakedown cruze netted us one of ten hook ups in three days and finally today we went five for five capped off with a 22 lb bruser buck, also in the mix a 18-19 pound chromer hen a couple mid teen bucks and a respectable 12 pound bullet of a girl just above the get out.

Envey leach gave me a couple on the swing that left the hole to never been seen again up on the upper Sol-Duc, which has been fishing rather well considering the boat parade last week -end. Many of our fish have been too hot to handle!!!

We have dates available through most of the season.

1/16/10

Wow have I been missing out on a great fishing oppertunity!

This Permit came to a bonefish fly wile just goofing around down the beach from the rental house, Scott Wilson, YT and myself drove down to a spot YT has fished before and just hung out catching reef fish and looking for bones. He was simply crusin on by, I yelled down to Scott so he could quick change to a permit fly, the fish just did a 180 and hung out in front of me so what the hell I tossed my tan Gotcha in front of him and he wandered over and ate it, the rest was half swim and half run from reef to reef wile Scotty and I tried to land him. Planing a trip back right after spring steelhead and looking for accomplices. More on the Blog. http://www.brazdasflyfishing.com/brazdas-washington-steelhead-blog/

Mexico here I come !

Going Flats fishing to Xcalak Mexico with Jim Gallegher and Tight Lines guide service.

Lisa and I are celebrating our 23rd aniversary with a saltwater flats fishing trip, something I am WAY overdue at accomplishing. I will be heading to Forks to start steelhead fishing for the spring season shortly after. As it looks now the run is strong and I have dates available through most of the season, shoot mean e-mail and we can book you in.

New Years Eve December 31 2009

Happy New Year!, I'm looking to relive the movie Hangover tomorrow,,,,, thinking it will NOT happen quite that way.

Looks like the fish runs from the great fall season are holding on, what a year to head for the Flats of Mexico! Good numbers in all the OP rivers right now, you all leave a few for me. I will be in Xcalak from Jan 6 through Jan 15. Oh,,,,, and anyone that actually would want to pay to go steelhead fishing send me an e-mail I will be reachable in Mexico and behond!!!

December 28 2009

Hope every one had a wonderful Christmas, and santa's sleigh was full of new fly fishing gear, now got out and put that stuff to good use. He has brought many the gift of fresh hatchery steelhead into the Olympic Peninsula rivers, try the Hoh, Sol Duc and Bogy I am sure there is some there waiting for you!

Check out my new JAlbum pages on the photogallery page in the menu above, finally got around to updateing those!

December 16 2009

Finally some relief from the cold and the rivers warm up,,,,, go up,,,, and out of shape for what may be a few days. When the drop comes we will see what has arrived, timing it right should produce some good numbers of hatchery steelhead. Watch for the Bogy to drop below 30 ft and a steady weather forecast it fly fishes best below 29, time it right and go get ya some.

December 8 2009

Well its winter all right with single digit temps over here in E-burg. All the eastside rivers are flowing burgs and the west side Puget Sound streams are close to it.

The Olympic Peninsula however is hitting mid thirty's and soon will be in the forty degree range, this along with good river conditions and a favorable hatchery run is the place to be right now for your steelhead fix. I am sure there is no shortage of anglers along with the steelhead. Some early wilds should be pushing into the HOH along with there share of hatcheries.

Jim Kerr is getting his fare share and A few of the swingers are finding enough to get- er- done in the cold water.

I am looking forward to another great season on the OP.

Brazda's Reports as of 4/23/2009

Back on the Yakima!

I will be fishing the Yakima from my home in Ellensburg this spring, I can hardly wait to be back on the Yakima river. The runoff is up and down daily with the weather and will be a challenge to hit it just right. I have been thinking of getting the Jet boat out and doing a little salmon enhancement fishing for smallmouth in the lower stretches.

I would like to thank those that came out to the OP and fished steelhead with me this past winter. Aside from a dismal first week of March the season was a great success with another season of large steelhead. We fished the lower stretches more than usual due to low water and had fantastic results right up to the 15th of April. In late March wile fishing with Jim Passage and Rollie Barbara both fantastic anglers we found, what is to date, the finest specimen of a LARGE winter steelhead I have personally ever seen up close. For many years we have encountered these extra large fish but they usually left us wondering just how big they are. This time the planets where aligned just right!

This steelhead has been estimated at 28 -31 pounds no joke, this fish had a tough time fitting into my extra large net. A quick measurement and he was on his way totally unharmed. Look for a quick shot vid coming later.

With the warm weather of early April brought snow melt to the Hoh and Queets which kept us off those systems. The Bogy and Sol-Duc provided some excellent Spey fishing in the latter part of the season, Steve Erickson has a propensity to run into good fishing whenever we get together, here again with one of many in our two days of angling.

He lets me get into the action once and a wile but after this fish I was pretty much not allowed to angle within sight.

Yes t-shirt weather on the OP this is one of 7 or so that day, four on the swing, not to bad for late season action.

Joe Donsky and Walt Jorgenson showed up the last two days of March. Again these two guys are very advanced anglers so results are quantified. After fishing the Hoh and hooking five and landing three the tribe set there nets and shut us off completely, I have never seen them attack the river so vigorously. We had jet boats and gill nets all around us in a matter of a few minutes and had to call in the shuttles to shorten up the float.
This actually was somewhat of a blessing I think who knows what the rest of the day would have been on the Hoh. We pulled off at noon and headed for the Queets it was dropping and just getting into shape, we made our first cast at 3 pm hooked the first fish at four pm and lost count at 15 by 5:30pm, what a day either way it would have been a slam dunk the Hoh WAS fishing great and the Queets was definitely ON.

The warm weather hit and both the Queets and Hoh went off for the next week and Queets never did come back in.
Thanks again for fishing with me and look for more consistent reports with my new website.
