Spring Steelhead: Get in tune with your Spey Fishing

Here on the OP we do things a little different with the Spey rod. If your tired of standing in the winter water for days on end waiting for that immaculate deception of your swung fly upon the wily winter steelhead, all the while wondering IF your doing it right, then you need to learn what we know.

Ever since my first experience with a swung steelhead at age 13 on the Methow river I have been working on the perfect swing. Discovering that most of them where coming by complete accident, until I began merging old school single hand tactics learned form my grandfather and the new two handed rods with heavy tips.

My first spey was purchased in 1990 a G Loomis 14 ft GL3 8 wt…it took a few years to build a good enough line to load the thing, even the rod manufactures didn’t know shit about it, but they sold us the things and I was determined to figure them out. With my 21 years experience with two handed rods and 35 years of catching steelhead we will be able to help you out at a price that won’t break the bank.

Come and join us for the easiest and quickest steps in the right direction, or if you just want to spend a few days brushing up on good technique at the front end of the season. Here’s what the program details:

~Lodging @ “The Bogy House”

~Fully hosted with breakfast lunch and dinner.

~A minimum of 6 hrs. On the water each day.

~Fly tying and gear work each night, includes looping tips, line repairs, rigging technique. “There may be a little Whiskey involved here.”

~Gear reviews and the bullshit that goes along with it.

~No more than four Anglers per Guide/Instructor.

~300$ per person each day/ night stay.

~Availability February 4-7 / 2012. Additional dates possible.

~Maximum attendance – 8 people.

~We suggested minimum of two days to get the most of the opportunity.

~Anglers staying all four days will get an extra night free.

You could call this an extra cheap deal on a fully hosted guide trip that is ALL ABOUT THE SPEY and ONLY the SPEY.

What you can expect to get from this class:

You will have been shown how to READ good steelhead water and how to fish the water you find to the maximum potential with the two handed rod.

How and when to High Bank, also known as Varsity Bank.

You will be shown how to do what we call a drift swing = the key to success with a two handed rod. This will detail additional moves to basic casting and mending.

You will learn to tie steelhead catching flies. Not just angler catching flies.

You will learn to rig up a spey rod for success and how to determine tip selection.

You will learn what TENSION on the fly IS and how to use it for maximum depth control.

When to use each type of cast, there’s only 2 the rest are tightliners and bar anglers.

You will leave with a better degree of confidence in catching winter steelhead on the swung fly. Possibly catch one while in class, we are using hooks!

What you won’t learn at this spey fishing class:

How to cast to the other side of the river in the wrong spot with the wrong gear!

Recommended gear:

Waders, rain coat, some sort of spey rod, reel, standard Skagit style line NOT a Skagit Short, sink tips, wading staff, and good boots with felt or cleats.

We can and will provide the correct gear for your spey outfit should it NOT have the correct line, tips etc… to accomplish the goals of the class. Please call before hand and we can discuss the gear needs you may have….
