Washington State Fly Fishing
Recommended Fishing Equipment (by Season)

Fly Fishing Winter Run Steelhead (December 1- April 15)

  • Rain jacket
  • Chest waders and boots w/out studs or with changeable soles - wade staff needed
  • Polarized glasses
  • Fingerless gloves
  • Medium weight jacket that can fit inside chest waders, preferably "wind stopper" material.
  • Layered under clothing to suit conditions
  • Billed hat
  • Stocking cap and or hooded shirt
  • 9-10 foot, 8 or 9 wt. fast action single hand rod loaded with a good weight forward dry line to match
  • 13 -15 foot, 7-10 wt. double hand rod with a matched multi tip fly line.
  • Any flies you have confidence in. I will always have a good assortment of custom flies and sink tips available while fly fishing with me

*Spey rods and or custom lines can be provided with prior request .

Fly Fishing Summer Run Steelhead September - November

  • Light rain coat
  • Breathable chest waders
  • Wading shoes without studs or w/changeable sole
  • Wade staff (if needed - personal preference)
  • Polarized glasses
  • Lightweight "wind stopper" jacket
  • Billed hat
  • Hooded sweat shirt
  • Sunscreen
  • 6 and 7 wt rods are best; some of the smaller lighter spey rods work very well. Dry lines and sink tips to match rods will accommodate the ever changing conditions for fly fishing

Fall conditions in Eastern Washington vary at extremes, so always check the weather forecast before you leave.

Fly Fishing Trout on the Yakima River March - November

  • Breathable chest waders (always bring but will not always use)
  • Boots without studs
  • Wind stopper jacket and or shirt
  • Quick dry spf 30 long sleeve shirt
  • Billed hat or cowboy style w/retainer for the wind
  • polarized glasses W/strap
  • Layered clothing to match personal temperature tolerance
  • Hot Weather SPF 30 quick dry pants w/removable legs, sun block, shirt optional, wading sandals, overcoat for evening, & sunscreen.
  • 3-5 wt 8-9 ft fast action rods for windy days
  • 1-5 wt any action for all other days
  • 4-5 wt 9ft fast action rod for nymphing and/or big bugs Matched lines to the rods brought

Fly Fishing Trout on the Columbia - April

  • Windstopper, gloves, stocking cap, face shield & Jacket. Heavy jacket
  • Breathable Waders, boots without studs y (switchable soles would be best)
  • Polarized glasses w/strap
  • Layered clothing for highly variable temps
  • Rain coat
  • Hooded shirt Wade staff
  • 5-7 wt fast action rods w/ multi tip lines
  • 5-7 wt spey rod W/ multi tip line
  • Any personal gear in a boat bag   you wish to bring

Fly Fishing Trout on the Columbia - June thru July

  • Spf 30 quick dry pant, shirts.
  • Windstopper, pants, shirt and or jacket, gloves
  • Breathable waders or hip boots, w/changeable soles, or w/o studs
  • Polarized glasses w/strap
  • Yellow shooters glasses work great in late evening
  • Sunscreen
  • Billed hat
  • Light rain coat
  • 3-5 wt rods of medium action loaded with W/F floating lines are best for the caddis hatches.
  • 4-6 wt 9ft fast action rods with dry lines will do the rest of the work.
  • caddis, stone or mayfly patterns work on any given day
