Montana Fly Fishing - River flows in Southwest Montana:
For 2008 I am happy to be offering the finest rivers in the Montana for
your fly fishing vacation. Come
and see what the best Montana Fly Fishing guides and
waters in the state have to offer the adventurous angler. Read
my summary of how the season will unfold,
find a style you like and come and see us here in Twin Bridges,
Montana.
We will start off the Montana fly fishing season on the Big Hole
River chasing the Mothers day caddis -
the most prolific hatch in the region hands down. During the
early spring/summer fly fishing we will shift
on to the Jefferson River - this is the big
fish river and season that we see the biggest brown Trout and rainbows of
the year, that are often measure in weight not inches.
June will bring the Salmon Fly on the Big
Hole and Madison River - I need
not say more, big bug’s equal big fish. The Salmon
Fly will
be found somewhere in our region till nearly July.

Mid June will bring on the dense hatches of PMD’s
on the Beaverhead River. This
head hunting hatch will continue well into July. Dusted with cahill’s,
blue wings and caddis the Beaverhead River
is a great Montana fly fishing river for the dry fly purist.
July brings continued steady hatches of assorted mayfly’s
and caddis on the Big Hole and Madison rivers,
along with the first of the terrestrials.
Terrestrials are the bug of fly fishing dreams; more giant
browns fall for big hoppers in my boat than any other
single insect. This is the season I live for, throwing dries
for six to eight weeks straight. Fishing the Big Hole, Jefferson, Madison and Beaverhead the
terrestrial action is favored by all. Amongst this time is the Spruce
Moth fall, if you have never seen one it is the best
terrestrial fly of them all, very elusive and in a time when
the rivers are at there lowest. The Big Hole river
comes alive from top to bottom and left to right, an awesome
spectacle.
Finally the season cools around late August and streamers are
the game. Mostly fished by the advanced angler but we can make
it work for anyone. Streamers in the morning & hoppers mid-day.
September is a time of renewed water temps and flows come back
up to turn on all the rivers with each freshet. Some of the best
fishing is had at the end of the season; every day is different
from nymphing to chucking streamers and flopping big giant rock
hoppers on the top.
Come to Southwest Montana for your next fishing
adventure and we will be sure to treat you to the best
it has to offer.
