Brazda's Fly Fishing Newsletter for January 2014

Happy New Year!

Steelhead on the Olympic Peninsula

Hatchery steelhead

Hatchery Steelhead runs are presently peaking but there seems to be more WILD fish around than the targeted brats. Steelhead fishing in January commonly is the least fishing pressure of the entire season. But with the developing trend of earlier WIld runs it can be just as great as prime time. As we all know everything is based on long term cycles and short term weather conditions. If your the type that needs to fish without actually seeing another angler then January is your month. Day trips available for $525 per day.

Baja Mexico RoosterfishON THE HORIZON:

Fun Fishing in Mexico, join me for hosted fly fishing to the Yucatan Peninsula (trip full) and East Cape Baja (2 spots open).

Call me at 253-307-3210 or email me at jeff@Brazdasflyfishing.com to book your hosted trip to Baja Mexico's East Cape with me next May 31 thru June 7.

Rooster fishing in Baja’s East Cape  May 31 – June 7 (2 spots open) Available now for two more anglers starting at $2025 per angler and includes shuttle from Cabo airport. Fishing in prime season for in shore Roosters, Bonito and Jack Creval and also available are Dorado, Striped Marlin and many others. This trip is for the serious angler with up to 10 species of saltwater fish available to the fly fisher.

A typical day fishing East Cape starts at 5 AM meeting the shuttle van in front of La Concha Hotel in La Paz. From there its a 50 minute drive to the beach launch in Half Moon Bay. Here we load gear into pangas and head for the BAIT mafia stationed out in the fishing grounds. Once our bait wells are filled its off to chase Roosters or whatever you desire in adjoining bays and points. Many locations offer mutiple species which make the days fishing all the more exciting. Most of the day is spent drifting with the tide throwing chum and casting to smashing Roosters or whatever you choose to pursue. Upon return dinner plans are made and evening festivities ensue, which commonly include Tequila..Often the fly tyers of the bunch get together every evening and produce the next days hope in the eyes of the Rooster..Rinse and repeat..

New spey rod design available in 2014:

These are two styles of spey rods I have been working on for three years now and they are finally becoming available for sale. I designed these with fly fishing in the NW for steelhead and trout in mind. From my experiances fishing the spey since 1990 and my guiding for trout and steelhead with guests for more than 15 years. At 11'9" or 12'6" they are shorter than origional "old school" designs and longer than newer switch rod styles. As you may have experianced many of the products made for fishing are thrown into the market without any real testing by there intended consumer. With this design I have taken into acount the natural conditions when pursuing Steelhead and Trout on the west coast, the manufactured lines available and the effectiveness of the swing game when proposing a spey rod design. Right down to the easy of use factor which has not been calculated by many pre existing rods companies. They are available in 6 weight ranges and provides the angler with the most efficient, responsive and less fatiguing rod on the market. They simply work for our enviroment.

11'9" in weights 4-9:

4 and 5 weights being best suited for Trout fishing in Alaska or any state were the swung fly will produce. Desired base line weights from 320 grains will throw dry tips to T11 and beyond.

6 and 7 weights for summer run steelhead when a wide range of sink tips, skandi lines and water levels are encountered. Base line weights at 420 grains PLUS.

8 or 9 weights for Salmon and Winter Steelhead. When the largest of fies and sinktips are desired for all water levels and conditions with light weight ease of casting are a must to stay in the game. Base line weights at 480 grains and will throw 15 plus feet of t 20 and a fly resembling a bird if you need!

12'6" 6 weight: One weight only for this rod as its the go to for the angler wanting a large power band and multiple rod load conditions, without a dought my favorite summer steelhead rod when length in not an issue. Base line weights from 450 - 600...
